Context Matters: GIS-Based Spatial Analysis of the Nasca Geoglyphs of Palpa
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this chapter we report on the GIS-based analysis of the Nasca geoglyphs of Palpa, Peru, undertaken in the course of the Nasca–Palpa Archaeological Project. We focus here on the analysis of spatial relationships between the geoglyphs and the surrounding landscape in terms of visibility and orientation. Our motivation for this contextual analysis was to gain a better understanding of the function and meaning of the geoglyphs by virtually assuming the viewpoints of the people who conceived, built, and used the geoglyphs between approximately 400 BC and 800 AD. In this sense our study of geoglyph visibility and orientation is a contribution to current attempts to incorporate cultural variables into the quantitative environment of GIS, thereby rendering GIS a more useful instrument for archaeological research. This approach required the development of new GIS tools tailored to the specific needs of archaeological analysis. The results of our study indicate that the geoglyphs can be understood as stages for public rites performed by social groups, whereas the incorporation of the surrounding landscape through visual links was apparently not a major concern. 19.1 GIS Applications in Archaeology: Chances and Limitations Geographical information systems (GIS) have become a widespread tool in archaeological research due to their manifold capabilities in terms of data capture, management, analysis, and visualisation (Wheatley and Gillings 2002; Conolly and Lake 2006). Because of their origin in cartography and geography, GIS are especially well suited for archaeological investigations at a regional scale, be theymore traditional studies of settlement patterns or recent approaches to landscape archaeology. GIS-based visib~lity studies of the Nasca geoglyphs at Palpa, Peru
The Nasca lines or geoglyphs in southern Peru are known as one of archaeology's greatest mysteries. Since the 1980s, however, new approaches have helped to better understand their function and meaning. The recent photogrammetric recording of 1 500 geoglyphs in the vicinity ofPalpa enabled for the first time a GIS-based analysis. Geoglyph visibility is one of their most discussed traits. While m...
متن کاملA Data Model for a Gis-based Analysis of the Nasca Lines at Palpa (peru)
The famous Nasca lines and geoglyphs in the desert on the south coast of Peru are a constitutive part of the Nasca cultural landscape of the Early Intermediate Period (approx. 200 BC – AD 600). Vast desert zones, largely uninhabited and unused in other epochs, were marked and altered on a large scale according to the cultural concepts, needs and beliefs of the Nasca people. A study of the geogl...
متن کاملA Fresh View on the Nasca Lines: Investigating Geoglyph Visibility in Palpa (Ica, Peru)
The Nasca geoglyphs in southern Peru are today usually viewed from the air. This has led to the false impression that they are only visible from above. In contrast, archaeological evidence shows that a continuous and manifold chain of activities took place on geoglyph sites during the Nasca period (200 BC – AD 650), involving large parts of the ancient population. These activities likely requir...

If archaeological objects, be they single finds, features such as graves or buildings, or whole sites, are to be analyzed . using a GIS, the underlying database in which information concerning the objects is stored has to contain both spatial data (defining the location of the object) and attribute data (describing its characteristics) (cp. Bill 1999: 11, Wheatley and Gillings 2002:23). The mai...
